The Pen-y-Gwryd stands alone at the pass where the Llanberis and Nant Gwynant roads meet, below the Glyderau. The 1953 Everest team gathered here, and their signatures are still written across the dining-room ceiling alongside kit and photographs from the climb. It’s an old-fashioned mountain hotel with a walkers’ bar, a base for Snowdon and the Glyders.
