A shapely spur off Carnedd Llewelyn in the northern Carneddau, with a steep face above a hidden mountain lake
Open accesson National Trust land that is open on foot at all times
Yr Elen is a pointed 963m top in the Carneddau, the broad northern range of Eryri (Snowdonia). It’s really a spur running north-west from Carnedd Llewelyn, the second-highest peak in Wales, and most people reach it by a short there-and-back from that summit. What sets it apart is the shape: a steep face drops from the top into Cwm Caseg — a cwm is a mountain hollow — with a small lake tucked in below. It stays quieter than the big Carneddau tops, and the airy ridge out to it is one of the nicer stretches in this corner of the Carneddau and Glyderau hills.
