At 1,062m, Carnedd Llewelyn is the highest point of the Carneddau, the broad range of grassy hills spreading across the north of Eryri (Snowdonia), and after Yr Wyddfa one of the highest summits in Wales. The name is traditionally linked to Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the last prince of an independent Wales, while Carnedd Dafydd two and a half miles to the southwest remembers his brother. The summit is a wide stony dome with long ridges reaching out in several directions, including a short sharp link to the shapely little peak of Yr Elen. This is high, remote ground with a lot of featureless plateau, and in mist the many spurs make it easy to set off down the wrong one, so navigation matters.
