The village of Beddgelert takes its name — “Gelert’s grave” — from the legend of Llywelyn the Great’s faithful hound, killed in error by his master, who then found the dog had saved his child from a wolf. A stone memorial marks the supposed grave in a riverside meadow below the village, a short walk from the bridge. The tale was most likely embroidered by an 18th-century innkeeper to draw the crowds.
