The Ffestiniog is one of the oldest narrow-gauge railways in the world, built to bring slate down from Blaenau Ffestiniog to the harbour at Porthmadog and now run for passengers. Its sister Welsh Highland Railway heads the other way, climbing through the mountains past Beddgelert to Caernarfon — the longest heritage railway in Britain. Both start from Porthmadog, where the two lines meet.
