The highest mountain in Wales south of Snowdon, a steep-sided peak at the head of the Aran ridge

Aran Fawddwy reaches 906m, which makes it the highest mountain in Wales south of Snowdon and the high point of the old county of Merionethshire. It’s the summit of the Aran ridge in southern Eryri (Snowdonia), a line of tops running north to Aran Benllyn, with a steep eastern face falling to a small llyn (lake) below. Access along this ridge was disputed for years and walkers kept to a permitted path, but open-access rights now cover the hill; the usual ways up start from Cwm Cywarch to the south or from Llanuwchllyn near Llyn Tegid. The Cambrian Way, the long walk up the spine of Wales, crosses the summit.
