Places to explore in County DurhamEngland · North East England

From the high moors of the North Pennines the land falls east through the dales of the Wear and Tees to a magnesian-limestone coast. The Whin Sill throws a band of hard dolerite across the dales, and over it the Tees crashes at High Force. Durham itself grew around the Norman Durham Cathedral, seat of the Prince Bishops, set on a tight loop of river. Barnard Castle guards the upper Tees, Raby Castle keeps a deer park to the north, and Beamish brings the county's mining past to life.
