Piercebridge is built right inside a Roman fort, possibly the Morbium of Roman records, which guarded Dere Street where the road crossed the Tees. Part of the fort lies under the village green, with excavated stretches on show, and the remains of the Roman bridge survive in a field a little downstream. A quiet spot on the Durham–Yorkshire border.
