Auckland Castle Park is what survives of a vast medieval deer park laid out for the Bishops of Durham, its grassland and wooded slopes running down to the River Wear on the edge of Bishop Auckland. It’s free to walk any day, on paths that lead past an 18th-century Deer House folly hidden among the trees. The wider Auckland Project site next door holds The Faith Museum and the summer spectacle of Kynren, so it’s easy to make a full day of it.
