St Andrew’s stands at South Church, just below Bishop Auckland, and its long, broad medieval nave has earned it the local name the Cathedral of the Dales. It grew on a Saxon site into one of the biggest parish churches in the county, and it’s an easy add-on if you’re already out at Escomb up the valley. Open to visitors and free; Bishop Auckland station is about a kilometre away to the north-west.
