Staindrop is a long village strung along a wide green with Georgian fronts, standing just south of Raby Castle and its deer park. St Mary’s church has Saxon origins and holds a fine set of Neville effigies, the medieval lords of Raby laid out in stone and alabaster. Bishop Auckland is the nearest station, around 12km to the north-east.
