Gainford was once dubbed the Queen of Durham villages, and it’s easy to see why — a broad green ringed by Georgian and early-Victorian houses, with the Tees running below. There’s a Norman church down by the river and the remains of an old spa well. A lovely quiet stop off the Barnard Castle road.
