Raby Castle is a 14th-century fortress built by the Neville family, and home to the Vane family for close to 400 years. Around it lies a medieval deer park still grazed by fallow deer, and walled gardens laid out in the 18th and 19th centuries below the castle walls. The castle opens Wednesday to Sunday (plus Tuesdays in summer) from March to October, ticketed; the deer park and gardens keep slightly longer hours. Staindrop, with its church of St Mary, is a short walk south.
