One of only four complete Anglo-Saxon churches left in England, Escomb Church is a tall, narrow little building of about the seventh century, put up from squared stone carted up from the Roman fort at Binchester close by — one block still carries a Roman legion’s mark, set into the wall upside down. It sits in a round churchyard ringed by village houses west of Bishop Auckland, and it’s free to look round. Bishop Auckland West station is a couple of km to the south-east.
