Bishop Auckland sits where the Wear meets the Gaunless, a market town that was for centuries the country seat of the Prince Bishops of Durham. Their palace, Auckland Castle, still dominates the town, its deer park stretching out behind. In recent years the town has been transformed by the Auckland Project — the restored castle and its Spanish-art gallery, the Faith Museum, and Kynren, a huge open-air night show telling 2,000 years of English history. The station is on the Bishop Line from Darlington.
