One of only four complete Anglo-Saxon churches left in England, Escomb church stands in a rounded churchyard in this small village near Bishop Auckland. It was built in the 7th century, much of its stone lifted from the Roman fort at Binchester — one block still carries a Roman legion’s inscription. A 7th-century sundial survives on the porch. Bishop Auckland station is about 2km away.
