The Tommy is Ray Lonsdale’s weathered-steel First World War soldier, sitting on the seafront at Seaham with his head bowed, rifle across his knees. Formally titled “1101”, it marks the first minute of peace after the Armistice, and is worked in rusting Corten steel. It’s out in the open, free to see at any hour. Seaham station is under a kilometre away, and St Mary’s church and the harbour cafés are close by.
