St Mary the Virgin is reckoned one of the twenty oldest surviving churches in England, its Saxon nave dating to the seventh or eighth century. It stands slightly apart from modern Seaham, up near the site of the old village above the sea, with the tower added in the thirteenth century. Still in use for services and free to visit; Seaham station is about a kilometre off.
