Roker Pier is a long, curving Victorian breakwater guarding the mouth of the Wear at Sunderland, its red-and-white lighthouse standing at the far end. Begun in 1885 with the lighthouse finished in 1903, it hides a tunnel running the full length of the pier beneath the walkway, once used to reach the light in bad weather. You can stroll the pier for free, and guided tours through the tunnel and up the lighthouse run on set days — book ahead as places are limited.
