Places to explore in Tyne and WearEngland · North East England

Built where the Tyne and the Wear reach the North Sea, this is old coal-and-shipbuilding country, and its landmarks wear that industry lightly. Antony Gormley's rust-red Angel of the North stands over the A1 on a former pit head; the Greek-temple Penshaw Monument crowns a hill above the Wear. The Romans ended their empire's edge here, garrisoning the fort of Arbeia at South Shields. Tynemouth Priory and Castle guards the river mouth on its headland, while the magnesian-limestone coast runs south past Marsden Rock to Souter Lighthouse.
