St Mary’s Lighthouse is a tall white tower on a little tidal island off Whitley Bay, joined to the mainland by a concrete causeway that floods at high tide. Time it right and you can walk across, explore the rock pools and climb the tower on the days it’s open; time it wrong and you’ll be waiting for the sea to drop. Check the crossing times before you set out. Spanish City and the Whitley Bay front are just down the road.
