Tynemouth is a handsome seaside town north of the Tyne, its long terraces and busy Front Street running out to the ruined priory and castle on the headland — a Benedictine priory founded in the 7th century, walled as a castle around 1095. Below are King Edward’s Bay and the wide sweep of Long Sands, one of the North East’s best beaches. The Metro station, a lovely bit of Victorian ironwork, drops you right in the middle.
