Spanish City is the white-domed Edwardian pleasure palace on Whitley Bay seafront, opened in 1910 and once the town’s fairground and dance hall — Dire Straits name-checked it in “Tunnel of Love”. After years of decline it reopened in 2018 following a £10 million restoration, and now holds restaurants, a tearoom and bars under the landmark dome. It’s free to wander in, with the usual food and drink prices once you sit down. St Mary’s Lighthouse is a short way up the coast.
