The Venerable Bede spent his life in the monastery at Jarrow and almost certainly prayed in the little chancel that still survives at St Paul’s — the oldest part of the church, from the seventh century. Set into the tower is the church’s dedication stone of 685, thought to be the oldest of its kind in England. Bede himself now lies at Durham Cathedral. Free to visit, with the ruins of the monastery and a museum alongside. Brockley Whins station is a couple of km south.
