The Leas is a two-and-a-half-mile ribbon of clifftop grassland running south from South Shields towards Souter Lighthouse, with limestone stacks and coves dropping to the sea below. Cared for by the National Trust, it’s open access and free, good for a blustery walk with the birds wheeling off the cliffs. Marsden Rock sits along the way, and there’s parking and a café near the Marsden end.
