Vast rust-steel angel above the A1.
Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North has stood above the A1 at Gateshead since 1998 — a rust-red figure 20 metres tall with wings spanning 54 metres, made of weathering steel that gives it that oxidised colour. It’s easily one of the most familiar sights on the drive north. There’s a free car park at its foot and you can walk right up to the base; it’s open at any hour. Heworth Metro station is a few kilometres off if you’re coming without a car.
