Beamish is a huge open-air museum near Stanley where staff in period dress run a working slice of northern life across several eras — a 1900s town with trams and shops, a 1940s farm, a colliery village and a Georgian manor. You ride between them on old trams and buses, so it’s an easy full day out. There’s an admission charge, and a ticket usually lasts a year if you want to come back. Allow plenty of time; the site is spread over acres.
