Built in 1726 by the local mason Ralph Wood, Causey Arch is the oldest surviving single-arch railway bridge in the world — a single stone span carrying an early coal waggonway high over the wooded Causey Burn. It’s free and open, reached by short woodland paths, with a footbridge giving the classic view down the gorge. The heritage steam trains of the Tanfield Railway run close by, so the two make a natural pairing.
