The Tanfield Railway reckons itself the world’s oldest railway, running its steam trains along a route with a section dating back to a coal waggonway of 1725. Its Marley Hill engine shed is the oldest anywhere still used for its original purpose. Trains run on set operating days through the wooded Causey valley, close to Causey Arch, and fares apply. A short but atmospheric ride, and a treat for anyone keen on early railway history.
