Gibside Chapel closes the great oak avenue on the Gibside estate above the Derwent valley — a domed Palladian building begun in 1760 to a design by James Paine. It doubles as the Bowes family mausoleum, with the tomb chamber beneath the chapel floor. It’s part of the National Trust estate, reached on the same ticket, and the long walk down the avenue to reach it is half the pleasure. Blaydon is the nearest station, about 5km off.
