Gibside is a Georgian landscape estate strung along the Derwent valley, once the seat of the Bowes family. You can wander the great oak avenue between the shell of the ruined hall, the orangery, the Column to Liberty and the Palladian chapel that James Paine built as the family mausoleum. It’s National Trust now, with walking trails through the woods, a walled garden and a café. There’s an admission charge for non-members; Blaydon station is about 5km to the north.
