The crowning feature of Newcastle’s cathedral is its lantern tower — an openwork stone crown finished in 1448 that once helped guide ships up the Tyne and still tops the old town skyline. St Nicholas’ was the town’s parish church for centuries before it was raised to cathedral status in 1882. Free to go in, and it sits right in the centre, a few minutes’ walk from Newcastle station.
