Jesmond Dene is a steep, wooded ravine cut by the Ouseburn through the north of Newcastle — surprisingly wild for a city park. Lord Armstrong, the Tyneside engineer, laid it out in the 1860s and gave it to the people of the city, and it opened to the public in 1884. There’s a waterfall, the ruins of an old mill, and a small free visitor centre with a petting corner. Open access and free; Manors metro station is a couple of km south.
