The Gateshead Millennium Bridge arcs across the Tyne between the Newcastle Quayside and BALTIC, and it’s the world’s first tilting bridge — the whole span rotates to let boats through, a slow movement that earned it the nickname the “blinking eye”. It opened in 2001 and is free to cross on foot or by bike at any time. Well worth timing a visit for one of the scheduled tilts. The Glasshouse stands just along the bank.
