Newcastle General Cemetery
Open accessfree to visit at any reasonable time
Known locally as Jesmond Old Cemetery, this Victorian burial ground off Jesmond Road was laid out in 1836 by the architect John Dobson, with grand gateways and chapels to match. Over 25,000 burials lie here, and volunteers from the Friends of Jesmond Old Cemetery run open days and history talks alongside their work restoring the grounds with Newcastle City Council. It’s free to walk through during daylight hours, and makes a quiet detour on the way to Jesmond Dene, a kilometre or so northeast.
