A market town on the River Wear north of Durham, Chester-le-Street keeps its Saturday market and an unusual anchorite’s cell built onto the parish church, where a medieval recluse once lived walled in. On the edge of town is the Riverside, Durham County Cricket Club’s ground and an occasional England Test venue. The station is right in the centre.
