WWT Washington Wetland Centre spreads a hundred acres of pools, reedbed, wood and meadow along the Wear, with hides looking out over wild ducks, wading birds and, in summer, hunting ospreys nearby. There’s a collection of captive flamingos and a resident group of Asian short-clawed otters, fed at set times. It’s a lovely spot for a gentle family day, with an admission charge and a café on site. Good paths make most of it buggy- and wheelchair-friendly.
