For the classic postcard view of Durham Cathedral and castle rising over the rooftops, climb up into Wharton Park — a restored Victorian park on the hill right above the station. There’s a bandstand, gardens, a battery of mock cannon and a café, along with a heritage centre telling the story of the Durham Miners’ Gala. Free and open all year, and you can’t get closer to the trains: it’s a two-minute climb from the platforms.
