Prebends Bridge
Local highlightPrebends Bridge carries a quiet footpath over the Wear on the wooded south side of Durham, and gives what’s probably the city’s most-painted view — the cathedral rising above the trees. It’s a graceful three-arch bridge, built in the 1770s to a design by George Nicholson, with a plaque quoting Sir Walter Scott’s lines on the “grey towers of Durham”. Free and open at all times, it’s a short riverside stroll from the centre, with Durham station about a kilometre north.
