Barely altered since it opened in 1899, the Victoria Inn is a little Grade II-listed gem of a pub a short climb from Durham’s cathedral. Expect coal fires, etched glass and well-kept cask ale in a warren of small rooms, but no food, this is a drinking pub of the old school. A genuine survivor, and all the better for it. The station is about ten minutes’ walk away.
