Castle Eden Dene is a deep, wooded ravine running down to the coast near Horden, and one of the largest surviving areas of ancient woodland in north-east England. It’s a National Nature Reserve, with waymarked trails winding along the burn beneath old yews and beeches. Access is free and open, but the paths are steep-sided and can get muddy and slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear helps. Horden station sits just up the hill, about a kilometre away.
