Powerful Tees waterfall plunging over Whin Sill.
High Force sends the River Tees over a 21-metre step of the Whin Sill in a single thunderous drop — and when the river is in spate it carries the greatest volume of any unbroken fall in England. The south bank can be reached free along the Pennine Way; the woodland approach on the north bank, through the Raby estate, charges a small fee. It’s loudest and most dramatic after heavy rain. Stanhope station is about 16km to the north-east.
