Reckoned the longest waterfall in England, Cauldron Snout is a 180-metre cataract where the Tees crashes down the dolerite steps of the Whin Sill, right below the dam of Cow Green Reservoir. Reaching it means a walk of a couple of miles from the Cow Green car park, and the falls themselves are a genuine hands-on scramble up the rocks beside the water — not a stroll. Sturdy boots and dry-ish weather make the climb a good deal safer.
