Dufton is a tidy village of red-sandstone cottages set round a long, tree-lined green beneath the Pennine escarpment. It’s a well-known stop on the Pennine Way, a day’s walk from the dramatic glacial trough of High Cup Nick above the village. The Stag Inn faces the green, and Appleby lies a few miles south.
