A perfect glacier-cut U-valley on the roof of the Pennines.
High Cup Nick is a near-perfect glacial valley bitten out of the Pennine edge, its rim ringed with columns of dark Whin Sill dolerite. The Pennine Way runs along the northern lip, and the view back down the great U-shaped chasm is one of the finest in the range. It’s a walk of about four miles in from Dufton, with no barriers at the unfenced rim, so take real care near the edge in wind or mist. Appleby is the nearest station, roughly 7km away.
