The Tufton Arms is a Victorian coaching hotel on the broad main street of Appleby-in-Westmorland, its bar a comfortable stop by the River Eden. Come in June and the town fills for the Appleby Horse Fair, the biggest gathering of Gypsy and Traveller communities in Europe. The station, on the scenic Settle–Carlisle line, is only a few minutes’ walk away.
