Substantial ruinsruined, but plenty survives above ground
Appleby Castle’s Norman keep has stood over the Eden Valley since the 12th century, one of the oldest buildings in this corner of Cumbria. These days the castle itself is a hotel, but the grounds, ramparts and Norman Centre museum are open to day visitors, with guided tours of the keep bookable in advance for a closer look. It makes a good stop if you’re travelling the Settle–Carlisle line — Appleby station is a short walk away.
