St John’s Chapel is the main village of upper Weardale, a line of stone terraces around a small green and a neat Georgian town hall. It sits deep in the North Pennines, good for high moorland drives and walks; the Killhope lead-mining museum lies up the road towards the Cumbrian border. Stanhope station is roughly 11km to the east.
