Nenthead, at over 400m up in the North Pennines, ranks among the highest villages in England. It was one of the earliest purpose-built industrial villages in Britain, laid out by the Quaker-owned London Lead Company with housing, a school and baths for its miners. The Nenthead Mines around it tell the story of that lead-mining past. Alston is about five miles down the valley.
