Nenthead Mines
Local highlightHigh in the North Pennines above the village of Nenthead, this is a restored landscape of what was once one of the biggest lead-mining operations in the country. There’s a heritage centre explaining how it all worked, and on open days you can take an underground trip into the workings. It sits at over 400m, so it’s a cool, exposed spot — check opening times before setting off, as they’re seasonal. Alston, with its narrow-gauge railway, is a few miles up the road.
